Comb colors:
Pale: sign of illness, often caused by parasites. Chickens need to be wormed regularly and checked for parasites.
Purpleish: check breathing of birds often sign of respiratory illness. If raspy treat with tylan. Could also be a sign of internal issue heart problems.
Black: normal for some breeds – but a sign a frost bite for usually red combs.
Scabby: picking from other birds, Fowl Pox or mites.
Coughing or raspy/weezy: respiratory disease, treat with tylan.
Head shaking: Sinus Infection, Respiratory Diseases, Lice, Mites
Sneezing: Sinus Infection or Respiratory Diseases
Bumblefoot: Swellings on feet, hot to touch, Can occur after a small foot injury gets infected.Treat with penicillin or antibiotic and clean area regularly.
Egg Bound hen: She will be straining and have little movement. Vent area is usually swollen up and can often lead to prolapsed vent. Apply Preparation H (generic) for a prolapsed vent or an egg bound hen. Use preparation H with a rubber glove and apply to bottom end as needed. If you suspect the hen is egg bound soak her in warm water for 20 minutes. We also used Liquid glycerin suppositories 7.5 ml to help with an egg bound hen.
Fowl Pox: Scabs/blisters on comb and wattles. It is a viral infection and it will run its course. Separate the birds with signs because it’s highly contagious. You can treat each scab with iodine to help dry the scabs up faster. Add vitamins to their water to help boost up there system.
